My Biblical School test is tonight. I just decided that I cannot possibly memorize the Psalm verse I had chosen, so I have chosen another, with three hours left to memorize it. I wish my brain worked better. This is my fourth year of these tests and I can tell you, I spend the day of the test memorizing, the drive to the church speaking them aloud, and the moment I get the test, I turn to the part where you are to write your memorized verses. I write them down and then POOF! they are gone. My brain does not work like that any longer.
I bet I could recite the entire mass. I know all my prayers. I know I have the capacity to memorize - or I HAD the capacity to memorize. But I tell you, it is gone. Thank God I STILL know what I learned long ago.

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgression. -- Psalm 51:1

I came up with an acronym so that I can remember the Psalm!

Great! I did offer my Rosary for you today. It is amazing how efficiently our brains work as we get older. It's true there is a lot we don't retain, but we seem to retain what we truly need for as long as we truly need to. Hope it went well!

ReplyDeleteI don't know if this will help or not but I had to tutor some dorm mates back in college. The subject was English history, which they were about as enthusiastic about as I would be about rebuilding an engine. We knew we would draw one of three essays and they just couldn't get it. I ended up teaching them about Gladstone and Disraeli by putting key facts to the tune of the Beverly Hillbillies (song appropriate for the age and time) So we had "Let me tell you all a story 'bout a man named Gladstone . . ." Since Psalms were meant for music, it may help you too.
ReplyDeleteI can never remember the Apostles creed, which means starting the Rosary is difficult without a book. I can remember the mysteries and what to focus on, but try as I might the words to the Apostle's creed elude me. I end up saying the other one (nicene?)
